Tired of Sleep Apnea? Our Dental Dentists Can Help
Are you experiencing poor sleep due to snoring or sleep apnea? Quality sleep is essential for your health and daily focus. Dental devices can help keep your airway open, improving breathing and sleep quality.
What is Sleep Apnea?
Sleep apnea is a condition where breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep. It can lead to snoring, disrupted sleep, and reduced overall wellbeing, affecting both your health and quality of life.
Understanding Sleep Apnea & Snoring Devices
Customised dental appliances help treat snoring and mild sleep apnea by gently repositioning the jaw to keep the airway open during sleep. These devices are comfortable, non-invasive, and can significantly improve sleep quality.
We also offer customised splints for teeth grinding (bruxism), helping protect your teeth while you sleep.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does an oral appliance help with snoring?
Snoring often happens when airflow is partially blocked and soft tissues vibrate. An oral appliance helps by gently moving the lower jaw forward, which can support the tongue and soft tissues and keep the airway more open during sleep.
Is an oral appliance the same as a night guard?
Not quite. A night guard is primarily designed to protect teeth from grinding. A sleep/snoring oral appliance is specifically made to improve airway space by repositioning the jaw. They look similar, but they work differently and are fitted differently.
Who is a good candidate for an oral appliance?
Many people who snore, or those diagnosed with mild to moderate OSA, may be suitable. Suitability depends on your symptoms, sleep study results (if applicable), jaw and tooth health, and bite. We’ll assess you and advise the most appropriate option—sometimes in collaboration with your GP or sleep physician.
Is it comfortable to wear? How long does it take to get used to?
Most patients adapt within a few nights to a couple of weeks. You may notice temporary jaw or tooth tenderness at first, but this usually improves as you adjust. Because it’s custom-made, comfort and fit are typically much better than over-the-counter devices.
Are there any side effects or risks?
Some people may experience temporary jaw soreness, increased saliva, dry mouth, or changes in bite feeling in the morning. Regular reviews help us adjust the appliance and monitor your bite and jaw joints over time, so treatment stays comfortable and safe.
