About Bruxism Splint
A bruxism splint (night guard/occlusal splint) is a custom-made oral appliance designed for patients who grind or clench their teeth, most commonly during sleep. By creating a stable protective barrier between the upper and lower teeth, it reduces direct tooth-to-tooth contact and excessive bite forces—helping to minimise tooth wear, enamel cracks, and damage to existing fillings, crowns, or veneers. A splint can also support muscle relaxation and may relieve morning jaw soreness, headaches, and discomfort related to the temporomandibular joint (TMJ).
Before making the splint, we perform a comprehensive dental examination and bite (occlusal) assessment, then take an impression or a digital scan to ensure an accurate fit. Will a splint stop me from grinding my teeth?
A splint may not completely “stop” the habit, but it protects your teeth by creating a barrier and reduces the harmful forces, which can significantly lower the risk of wear, cracks, and jaw discomfort.
How do I know if I need a bruxism splint?
Common signs include: morning jaw soreness, headaches, tooth sensitivity, worn or flattened teeth, chipped teeth/fillings, or your partner noticing grinding sounds at night. A dental exam can confirm signs of bruxism and bite-related stress.
Is it comfortable to wear? How long does it take to get used to?
Most patients adjust within a few nights to 1–2 weeks. A properly fitted custom splint should feel secure and comfortable. If it feels tight, rubs, or changes your bite, we can adjust it.
How do I clean and maintain my splint?
Rinse it after use and gently brush it with a soft toothbrush (no abrasive toothpaste). It’s better to dry the splint with a soft tissue . Store it in its case. Avoid hot water (it can warp the material). Bring it to your check-ups so we can assess fit and wear.
